I have a lovely tortoise-shell cat named Tara. She is not the typical tortie, with attitude. She is a sweetheart and I am so lucky to have her.
Before She Slept
She stretches and yawns, extends one delicate paw
as she settles into slumber,
tail encircled and tucked,
more shadow than cat
except when the light finds her,
autumn in soft fur.
She slumbers,
but first she sleeps,
and before that
she naps,
and before that
she snoozes -
always
nodding off.
A few times a day,
she walks with nonchalance,
as if food needs her
more than she needs it,
curls her paw,
pulls tiny nuggets
onto the floor,
munching only a few
before washing down
her tiny meal
with tiny sips
of water.
She is a dainty one,
affectionate and gentle,
who awaits in the morning
to be carried like a baby
from room to room,
as she kisses my face,
placing one paw on each side,
patting and licking,
and when she’s done,
she sleeps
again.
