Innocence or Insult?

In America, it's commonly used as a positive "high five" (meaning good) or is a friendly wave of greeting.....it can also mean "stop", as when a traffic officer directs traffic.......but to indicate "offense"? I much prefer "the finger".  What does 5 fingers mean in Greece? 👇  👇  👇 In Greece, holding up five fingers with the palm facing outward and fingers slightly spread is known as the moutza (or mountza). It is a major insult, roughly equivalent to the middle finger in Western cultures, often signaling "to hell with you," contempt, or "I'm offering you my waste". The "Moutza"Offensive Gesture: It is considered one of the rudest gestures in Greece, dating back to the Byzantine era when criminals were paraded with ashes or filth smeared on their faces with an open palm.Context: It is used to convey severe disapproval, disgrace, or to curse someone, frequently employed during driving arguments.Intensity: The closer the palm is to a person's face, the more insulting it is. Using both hands at once doubles the insult. How to Avoid: When asking for the number five or waving, ensure your palm faces inward toward yourself, not outward toward others.

While sometimes used playfully between close friends, tourists should avoid showing an open palm to anyone, as it is generally interpreted as a serious sign of disrespect.
