My teeth remain attached and unbroken. ;-)

The Win

Sports have never been my thing,
happy when the team
I cheered for won,
but no heartbreak
when the score was lopsided,
as long as the players
did their best.

Someone always loses.
The fun is in the playing.

Right?

Oh, but tonight
I was vested. Final game,
my grandson on defense,
the sound of sticks playing
whack a mole,
a flurry of action in a game
of lacrosse, back and forth
up and down the field.

At the end,
scored tied,
now double overtime,
the first to score
winning.

I held my breath.
Covered my eyes.
My heart racing,
the excitement of the crowd
contagious.

And we won!

The joy I felt
filled my heart, inspired me
to jump with glee,
my phone above
slipping from my hand
hitting my head,
then my teeth, falling
down, down, down,
disaster imminent.

Channeling the skill
of those young lacrosse players,
I dropped my hand,
scooped it up,
then celebrated my own
personal win.

When someone we care for wins something or other, it's a whole different ballgame. Lovely, positive poem.

Your poem brought a broad smile to my face, Melinda. I'm with you on "sport". I feel that players and spectators would benefit from remembering that it is a game they are playing/watching. I favour watching athletics which seems to have a more palatable rivalry on the whole. But, gosh, I do have great admiration for the dedication and determination all sports people give to their training etc. (makes me lament my youth!) Blessings, Allen
