French psychologist Alfred Binet (along with his colleague Théodore Simon) invented the first practical intelligence test in 1905. The test was developed to identify school children needing special educational assistance, aiming to provide individualized attention to help them succeed in school, rather than to label or permanently measure innate intelligence.  Key Details About the First IQ Test:Goal: The French government (or specifically, the need to evaluate children under new mandatory education laws) required a way to identify pupils who were not thriving in the standard curriculum.Methodology: Binet and Simon created a series of tasks focusing on memory, attention, and problem-solving. They developed the concept of "mental age"—a child’s score compared to the average performance of peers. The "Why": Binet believed that intelligence was too complex to be represented by a single number and argued against the idea that intelligence was fixed. He wanted to improve education and help, not permanently classify, children.Evolution: While Binet created the first scale in 1905, the concept was later adapted by others (such as Lewis Terman to create the Stanford-Binet test) to create the modern "Intelligence Quotient" (IQ) score.
Why the "First" IQ Test was Different:
Unlike later American adaptations that often aimed to rank individuals based on a rigid concept of inherited intelligence, Binet’s original intent was proactive and aimed at providing remedial care for children with lower academic performance.
