The bird
masterstroke its designmolded like a hanging pod
down a twig tip
easy to bullseye into
from below-
subtle protection
from most cunning predators
and cold rain that swirls savagely:
It uses strands of straws
and with its beak and claws
neatly knits a niche
with a cozy interior
furnished with care and love
to cradle the eggs
and swaddle the nestling,
It's beyond the skill
of man to craft even
such a little husk woven hut.
To watch this simple
neighborhood event
is to look anew what a miracle
is the bird's drive
but the real prodigy
is the bird itself-nest and life
cobwebbed in feathers
by wildlife creator.
