The nest
is the Baya Weaver's master piecedesign, shaped like a pendant pod
securely perched to a twig tip,
with decoy door-
sesame codified for inmates only.
This subtle shield defies
the raiding crow
the hunting snake
the raccoon and the squall.
With beak and claws
the bird weaves strands of straws-
something is sure in it
where each blade belongs
but it cannot explain
save obeys the order
until a cozy braided niche is
crafted
to cradle the eggs
to swaddle the little warblers.
A miracle but greater is the bird
whose life is cobwebbed to
fragile feathers,
above the shards of broken
earthly glass.
