“The interstate suffered catastrophic infrastructure damage during Hurricane Helene, when a five-mile stretch of eastbound lanes completely crumbled and washed into the Pigeon River near the North Carolina–Tennessee state line.”
Mountain Pass
While workers rebuilda highway left in ruin
when nature’s fury spilt
wild wind and heavy rains,
stones are pushed
by powerful machines,
clearing the way
for new construction.
Once a hurricane
made its way
across a mountain range,
erasing what man spent
decades building.
Now cars, trucks, creep
while frustration mounts:
for vacationers anxious
to check-in and unwind,
for goods waiting to be stocked,
for people just wanting
to get on with their day.
I wonder,
once it’s all renewed
what is to stop it all
from happening
again?
