Medusa
Turn it off.Change the channel and stop the constant
IV drip of news
meant to dull you to truth,
to turn your mind into a vessel for the propaganda,
spread the division that keeps people angry,
watching for the next new topic
to light up all the centers of outrage
in your more than willing brain,
addicted to hate, to division,
to pointing out your enemies
which were once your friends,
the people you’ve worked with,
shared meals with,
share blood with.
I am not a communist.
That’s their new accusation du jour -
a word worn smooth from overuse,
aimed at whoever won’t applaud.
Immigrants rounded up,
trans people hiding,
an unpopular war,
midterms on the horizon -
they need a scapegoat,
a group just vague enough to warrant outrage.
For now, a communist is anyone
who does not support this regime.
Period.
Wake up to what the game is.
The only way they win is sowing division.
We could leave politics out of our conversations
and get along as we once did
before this Medusa kept finding new ways
to turn people’s hearts to stone.
But the fear of conquest of a vague enemy
keeps you on edge, untrusting,
afraid if you let your guard down
your world will crumble.
Guess what?
It already is.
