Worm Killer

I saw a shift in the sand and ran away.
A giant worm exploded out the ground
And chased me but I managed to allay

The beast till I reached a bulging, acrid mound
And climbed up to its highest peak and sat
In wait till the worm, confused, hearing no sound,

Started to sink. That’s when I jumped on its fat,
Bulbous white head and shoved my fist within
Its greasy eyes, once pierced, felt like a vat

Of oil. I shoved deeper until the skin
Behind pupils was in my grasp. I pulled
As it roared wild. I curved my fist deeper in.

Soon it settled. And dead. My breathing cooled.
I yanked my arm from out its head and saw
The sands be calm. The sands this worm once ruled

Now still, until, another, tiny, maw
Appeared and leapt at me. I smashed its jaw.
