It’s okay to acknowledge that sometimes mantras, therapy, self-help programs, prayers, and/or the belief systems we build around us just fall flat. Still…onward.
worn around a neck that had bent
in submission so many times
that she needed reminding of her worth.
She did not wear it very long;
symbols only work
if one believes in their magic,
mantras and prayers offered up
to gods who answer back.
Perhaps the echo of the words
as her fingers grasped the pendant
should have been Enough;
they landed with a quiet thud.

Echoes
The pendant proclaimed “I am enough,”worn around a neck that had bent
in submission so many times
that she needed reminding of her worth.
She did not wear it very long;
symbols only work
if one believes in their magic,
mantras and prayers offered up
to gods who answer back.
Perhaps the echo of the words
as her fingers grasped the pendant
should have been Enough;
they landed with a quiet thud.
