the road home
leaving town, groceries
and library books tucked away
in the trunk and back seat
we head home
town, such as it is
two-thousand residents
an equal number of summer tourists
recedes in the mirror
twenty miles to home
twenty miles of hills and curves
pastures and forest, a two-lane blacktop
and the windows are down
