Written to the prompt "A Place called Peace."

Visitors

Peace dropped by today for a visit,
housework done, yard work finished,
she sat beside me as I watched the birds,
feeders full, fly away and back, away and back,
as squirrels surveyed the baffles plotting,
scurrying up the pole and back to ground,
finally nosing around for some fallen lunch.

Peace dropped by for a visit Sunday
when after church we took a nap,
breaths calming as talk of current affairs
gave way to the comfort found
when bodies share space, dark room,
fan, a cooling breeze across our bodies,
as we lay with hands held, connected.

Peace dropped by for a visit last Friday
when my squad of feisty friends gathered,
our pot luck giving us temporary pot bellies,
predictions of what awaits met with nods,
each of us knowing that we may never see
a better world, the one we dreamed of
when news was truth and the earth not sick.

Peace dropped by for a visit two summers ago
when my three children came and we were together,
my heart whole, my spirit soaring, moments when
we laughed, we cried, we even had a fight,
and yet, in a dinner shared, we found Her again,
let Peace ground us each in presence
as I told each child, “I am so proud of you.”

When Peace drops in to visit, Depression departs,
Anxiety slips out for a needed break
until Reality returns and Worry starts spinning,
rattling off the dire possibilities that certainly await
so that Peace has no seat left, all are taken,
and I am left to deal with the rest,
as each takes a turn at erasing my memory.

I just love this, Melinda. What an excellent poem with a unique and powerful concept. Peace is such a beautiful thing, sensation, experience, granting those interludes among the World's mad bustle (and worse!) Somehow your poem allowed us to share in those moments. So well written. Blessings, Allen

Melinda, I've been thinking of an appropriate comment, having a hard finding the words. I'm thinking: it's elegant, it's finely crafted, it's unique, it's meaningful, it's rich in personality, it's vivid, it's bittersweet, it's important. It is a very, very good poem.

I can't think of a more concise comment, so I'll leave at.
