Low Tide
You thought you knew how I’d respond -alone, on my own,
you gone at my request -
that I could not resist
your undertow of words,
your shimmering pleas of love
coming across in texts like waves of longing,
promising devotion if I’d just open the door,
let you return.
You did not understand how I had changed,
built a seawall of hopes dashed and years wasted
as you kept crashing into me,
eroding my trust,
washing the sand from my eyes
until I saw you clearly
and shut the door against the tide.
The storm you were, once passed, scattered debris,
memories broken beyond repair, not worth keeping…
the beach now clean,
the ocean calm,
the shore, undisturbed,
finally mine.
