Inspired after reading “WILDFIRES” by ken d. williams.
her temperature rises.
A thousand angry fires
scorch her dried-out skin,
a parchment paper covering
of forgotten scars - some regenerating,
others marking her forever.
She provided what was needed,
asking nothing in return.
But when others spoke on her behalf,
we called it too big an ask,
an inconvenience to alter
the comforts we took for granted.
Once she was young and vibrant,
a mother who gave and gave,
hoping her sacrifices
would breed restraint
in those who took and took.
But Mother Earth underestimated
the depth of her children's greed.
Now she burns, and we make excuses.
Nothing is ever our fault.

Scorched
As she struggles to breathe, her temperature rises.
A thousand angry fires
scorch her dried-out skin,
a parchment paper covering
of forgotten scars - some regenerating,
others marking her forever.
She provided what was needed,
asking nothing in return.
But when others spoke on her behalf,
we called it too big an ask,
an inconvenience to alter
the comforts we took for granted.
Once she was young and vibrant,
a mother who gave and gave,
hoping her sacrifices
would breed restraint
in those who took and took.
But Mother Earth underestimated
the depth of her children's greed.
Now she burns, and we make excuses.
Nothing is ever our fault.
