A much rewritten poem attempting to describe a world being eroded, by wars, covid, general instability and how I wake to another day inside my ageing bubble.

CAMERA OBSCURA

I woke this morning on a breath
That came from somewhere unknown.
The room was lit with opal light
Threatening my sense of presence.
The window view was Summer and already hot,
So much hazing green; and crisping brown.
Pareidolia was everywhere,
In shadows, bushes, Mukberry trees.
Life seems to have completely changed.

Much solidarity is being stripped –
Like the dried leaves off the trees –
And all about is uncertainty,
Unsound ground, new disorder –
Forest fires, and war that seems everywhere!
Yet I am not with great despair,
Insanity, or mental ‘fracticality’,
Or loss of my essential celtic core.

The season of holiday is here
In my place, world,  of changeability,
Inflation, and fragmenting democracy.
Only my soulmate will raise a glass
Over a vegetarian lunchtime meal,
With wine, or more likely orange juice,
And there will be a tear in my eye
For all the scenes that are banked
In those mystic akashic records.
There’ll be none other to share a toast
Within the range of my physicality.

Those others, and the whole outer world
Including the snooping army helicopter -
Beyond my glassy auric armour –
Could all be imaginary souls
And nostalgic manifestations that
I watch from within my camera obscura,
Whilst I am secretly seated
In some mystic directorial chair,
Painting a suppositious World
That seems, suddenly, upside down.

This is rich and strange in a way that pulls you in. The morning light, the heat, the pareidolia in the trees, all of it builds a world that feels both vivid and slightly unreal, which fits the camera obscura idea perfectly. The turn toward the soulmate and the quiet toast over orange juice is genuinely moving. But the poem gets crowded in places. The helicopters, akashic records, Celtic core, and auric armor all compete for attention, and the voice starts to feel less like a speaker and more like a channel for too many signals. The poem is strongest when it slows down and lets the ordinary become eerie. The final image of painting a world upside down is great, and could carry even more if the road to it were less cluttered.

I certainly do relate to your words. Seems very much like we are in bizarro world or upside down world or there are even times I wonder if I have died and this is my hell. I really enjoyed the stanza about you and your wife sitting down to the meal. Life goes on in tiny normal ways. It’s really good to have someone to share those with.

Sincerely,
Melinda
