If we are all pieces of wood
in a stack of firewood,
for people to retrieve and ameliorate,
those at the bottom stand just as tall as the top,
And we will all turn to ash eventually.
If we are all flowers in a garden bed,
The bees choose only the most colourful,
And use their seed to make the honey of growth,
Sweet and sugary,
The syrup of the dawn
If we are balloons, pumped full of air,
Tied to a string and held,
Or set loose to float on the wind,
We will float to the sun
And pop, remembering those who matter.
If we are writers spinning words like cotton,
Playing with language like dice,
Promoting idealistic views laced with reality,
We will educate the word-poor
And encourage the beauty.
Yet we are floaters,
Lifted by air currents
and travelling to the moon,
Puffed up by the winds of time,
Supported by the scaffold of dreams
Aim and you will jump high,
Sing and glass will strengthen, not shatter.
What we are not now, we never will be.
We cannot rectify our indiscretions,
But we can make the next part better.
Offer not what you think you can give,
But give what you think you don't have.
Take notice of those less worthy than you,
Remember those you leave behind
Beware and be aware.
Pass the ball and then kick it through the roof.
