My best friend when I was a kid wanted to be a doctor. She is now a prostitute. I don't judge her. I just want her to know I still love her.
This is for you darling.

For my midnight girl

I sit among these men as they laugh about their encounters,
They laugh and pat each other's backs
As they degrade whatever reputation is left of you.
They make fun that you pretend you need the money
When in reality what you wanted was a lay for the night.
I look at these men, these honorable men,
The best of the cream, the most intelligent, the most educated.
I look at their gleeful faces as they describe how they hit you,
How they mistreated you since they were paying for it.
'She wanted it anyway,' is what they say.
And I know I would kill them if I had the power to.

And I try imagining how it is like for you,
How if feels to give your body to a stranger.
Allow his filthy hands to feel you,
With no respect at all.
How you have to withstand the sneers people give,
Why they don't understand why you are the way you are....
Don't you cry in your solitude?
Don't you wish it could be different from the start?
Don't you think you would have looked for me?
And maybe we would have found a solution?

It was just the other day, my girl,
You and I had all the dreams in our heads.
And we vowed we would never leave each other,
Never forsake each other...
I broke my promise, I let you go
I was not there to help you face the world-
I am not able to help you and return the dreams we once had.

So now I cannot be the same one who accuses you,
I cannot ask you why because I know I let you down,
The world let you down; your mother let you down.
And now you seem like you don't care,
But I can feel your hurt right inside my heart.
I can hear your silent cries
I can see your loathe for yourself
Yet you have decided there is no turning back.
I do not judge you, I do not scorn you.
But when the time comes and you know you need out,
I will always be here for you.
