Arab Women in literature

As we care of what the Arab women achieved in public works and political existence, we have to stop for few papers and put our vision to analyze living literature written by Arab women writers within a hot cultural perspective, sticking it to the wider context of the Arab societies' lightening some grounds in their struggle for liberation, freedom and self-expression.
I think I should put finger on the lines only of few serious, strong women who dedicated their lives without stopping the reforming in their writings, and took the national interest mainly to fill their battleground. Also the women who are still reflecting their passions in appealing for the best freedom for their nations and not to their personal ravishing items !! milting their aimed compilations to commonweal, and those women who are shaped and determined to stay a carpet beater until the ground's threads shine over their inlaid lands !!! who fought for the clean words , at the same time they are unaffected styles of women by landing in parachutes , but planted and gifted ones !!
Who really achieved to get a courtesy from their societies, especially when we say Arab nation do not respect the woman's equality, that's why I will talk about the contemporary time I watch and see , except Mai zeyadeh the great woman who I didn't get to see since am born in 1954, and she was born in 1886 – 1941 ) but I couldn't skip her in my study !
At the same time there are so many women writers who wrote the feminist honeyed personals, and lived separated from touching their ground's crises!!! but those will get to inter my full study later in my second episode , and I hope some time I can read them again to find the relevance of creativity .
the impression that this article provides, is that there is a non balancing large -ranging names who astonishes the field , but not stay for long in the memory , for so many reasons , such as in a very opposition interesting literature , so many books have been published generously written by modern Arab women in all genres that needs to be better recognized. With the rise of feminism and women studies, the importance of this literature runs daily to mix the ink with tree's blood , but how could it last to stay useful ? my article provides a limited portrayal of Arab intellectual and literary life that shows a little of Arab women literature !!! I know such place can't facilitate the study of this literature and provide that much needed reference and research pages in Arab women creativity!!!
But I can say that , Politics for women filled their literature , movements , in this burning world, that's why we should carefully look at the distinguished women in the Arab literature and made the great favor in creativity action!!Specially those sturdy, powerful Arab women who annoyed their enemies by their serious frank, and abundant poetry and writings, and made their governments silent with dread , watching them flooding the air and the papers by wealthy creativity, without paying that frightened attention to any hush, or being stopped in deep silence or losing consciousness by any authority , or by man's hand or firestone against their books , as to prevent them from raising heads or appearing . at the same time the demagogy and dalliance in literature took the biggest advantage and profit to be grouped , and the flabby trembling literature became the nose of the request for the governments in the Arab world as confusion is filling the pastures !!! so the monody started filling the women's yields in poetry , and became the retreat of sadness in hearts !! But really no one could fill the nation's hearts by meadows like the women writers and poets!!
And Iam sure those women were and are the center of literature's outlook leaning on the actual exhausted ground to hold and strengthen and lean on, they do not relate to the silly bohemians groups in fake thrifty thousands books supported by governments and some trembled suspicious authorities...... !!! those who took to lead the superiority complex to prevent the serious women's literature's garden from blooming, but the women bloomed their throats and became the water plantain on the ground and flourished naturally leaving the high authorities offensive and cyanosed !!!!
!clean Women writers and Poets are the main destination in my article, so Iam holding the paper knife to open those women's envelope like touching the soft fruit picker , but my fingers are ulcerated from opening the authorities disgusting readable and unreadable manuals !! Those manuals seem to me very hollow in spite the arched volumes recounted and tugged by the sick horses serving the highs!!! Yes those horses try to stop the women writers and poets from whinnying strongly among the horses, committed trials of cutting their vocal cords!!And the living blooded era is witnessing this and witnessed, but in the curve of the defeated horses the high low authorities became bewailed and mourned instead of dashing to struggle against the good women in literature .
Never can see more than what is going on now ?? and what was going in the last century against Arab women poets and writers ?? as the women have been standing directly on fire , in Palestine for example losing the harvest or the life , their lands , houses , villages, trees , revenues , and the same time loosing the men's triumph !!!like what happens in Iraq now .
I understand that Diversity is a literature's health, and I always ignore the copy or stereotyping in stands. But what makes me raged that some of women try to hijack any prize by any price from the west, they believe the western readers and leaders!!
We should show the world that we have our range of styles, and we are not nuances for any nation , and we are the writers have ideologies, we are individual artists and creative figures , who speak loud and frank against who attacks our civilization , we are the owners of the holy soil and planted culture , and we should defend our stands against silly waving prizes !!
.

Who is waiting the Arab women writers to keep silent and helpless under the darkness!!???? The world looked at the Palestinian women poets as a steam boilers . and didn't see the causes since the leaders are plunged in negligence, west , leaders and men poets think that the women poets have to be a diamond tars on soil , the essential oil or the fragranced candles to enjoy .
But the women scream and write without any loss because they do not look for gain or positions like men, they are in thirst of pointing with fingers against the disasters, so at the same time the men of their nations called them demons or devils as they expect the tenderness of their feelings in empty whispers but none of this they touched , they stayed in their grandness with their significance dusty road !!Until the death or to become darker than this !!! They know it is dark in all the world , that's why strong Arab women poets scream and write true strong poems , writing poems chocking like a lump in the throat !! because the agony is huge and the double dealers are filling the spaces treating nations unjustly !! I know what screaming for justice and correction in the literature means!!! I know exactly what the message in writings ( poetry , novels , articles, short stories , theatre , art, paintings ) mean ??? and they know also what this cost ?? and how big they were imposed to pay the huge fine on ?? especially when the singing and love poetry , erotic poetry became a brainwashing invasion and fresh under the delusion and illusion , so those women appear like aliens under the impulse appetite in all sides while the blood shedding covering the damage !!!
What could stop the Arab women poets abroad from martyrdom within the scene of holding an olive tree to prevent from the Israeli Bulldozer attack??? At the same time their leaders are seeking to satisfy the thief's and enemies!!??
I know how great is the good deed those women have done to the ground for their people , and when they walked on the proper pages more fluently , superior in poetry methods and language to inflame the manhood without giving an ear to the neglecting facts !! The strange reaction in the field is to find people salute and respect those women symbols and the officials deny them!
But no regret in their pens and wills!! they write without fear but courage in using heroic poetry , elegiac poetry , narrative poetry , lyric poetry , erotic poetry , blank verse, poetry verse , poetize and compose politic poetry in the new strong radial poetry which reflects the blood sunbath against the candlelight , against the innocence they have their birth certificate in writing stern poetry , they know how to use the vocabularies of rockets , detonator , lightning rod , thunder bolt , blood , land , camp , refugee, Jerusalem , thieves enemies , sadness , Israel, freedom , returns , wars but talking about peace is like talking about fiction and they do not care for fiction since Hollywood took care of the truth of bleeding , funny manners against the authorities like putting them in face cards , !!!
The men expected those women to whisper softly , and ask the agreement from the field to wander through the man's garden , but honestly those came to our ground audibly and touched the ears , the hearts , since most of them not bugles for the governments , they wouldn't decrease the volume of their literature measures , the women Iam talking about are the pens on ground not to be lost , but they are parallel with the famous men in writing or in creativity !!!
It is different of course from a poet to another , it is mostly clear the women who Iam going to put as examples are the crystal names and the net profit who could coin the words and form the honest literature for our nation and struggled the glairing orders in governments , they are faithful , they measured the troubles and been agonized by so many ways of neglecting to push them to put down their opinion !!!but correction costs wounds !
Of course when I say correction, I know exactly what those creative women symbols have done and specially in their loud manners forgetting the low voices under the majority of the Arab men who tried to ignore and still ignoring their casting voices in values , they really have been pointing at the elusive figures !

So through the large field of Arabic literature in the 20th century until now in October 2007 , we can find some great Arabic women in poetry , novel , art , theatre , all types of literature , and are really transmitted in knowledge , learning , awareness famous and well known in spite the distant that being created around them , things are different to the form of Arabic women literature of course , and even the prose environments now are opened for political expressions, this period is filled with snippets of literature , especially poetry but no harm , as long as distinguished women are standing shaped !!

Close to my observation Iam proud to paste some of my papers by those perfumed names, those inimitable women who labeled the literature Library by treasures, and I know most of them drank the bitter subsistence before they left in the sundown glamour , and some of them still trying to empty the jars of bitterness from their existence !!! The official philosophy of dilatory, tormented their way of living yes, but didn't cause any damage in their minds!!Nor their blessed hands in writing, delighted days and nights!! And became blessed only by opened eyes and embedded by appreciations, envied for their patience but jubilant!!!
Starting to put lines under the great woman Mai Ziadeh (1886-1941) who has implanted her name and literature in the history of Arab women and men writers. The Iraqi poet and critic Nazik al-Mala'ika (born 1923), Syrian fiction writer, poet, and columnist Ghada Samman (b. 1942), the famous Palestinian poet Fadwa Tuqan (b. 1917) Egyptian feminist and fiction writer Nawal el-Saadawi (b. 1930), Lebanese fiction writer Emily Nasrallah (b. 1935 Kuwaiti poet Su'ad al-Sabah (b. 1941), Egyptian scholar and fiction writer Suhair al-Qalamawi (1911-1997), Egyptian novelist and famous columnist , famous journalist , Sukaina Fouad , who wrote ( the night on catching Fatima ) Palestinian poet, scholar, and anthologist Salma Khadra Jayyusi (b. 1928) United Arab Emirates poet and short story writer Zabya Khamis (b. 1958 Iraqi poet Lami'a 'Abbas 'Amara (b. 1929). Iraqi Poet Sajeda Al Mosawi ( b. 1952 ) , Egyptian poet Shareefa Al Sayyed ( b. 1958 ) the architect and short story writer and painter Maiss Razem (b. 1978 ) Jordanian novelist Laila Al Atrash ( b.1950 ) , Jordanian novelist Samiha Khrais ( b. 1950 ) , Jordainan Poet Nabila Al Khateeb ( b. 1960 ) , Lebanese Poet Siham Shashaa,( b. 1964 ) the palistenian Great Novelist Sahar Khaleefa( b. 1948 ) the Palestinian poet shahla al kayyali ( b. 1948 ) the Jordanian Poet Amina Odwan ( b.1948 ) the Palistenian Poet , writer , novelist , painter , short story , columnist , Rajaa Abu Ghazala ,the Palestinian , wonderful novelist Liana Badr ( b. 1956 ) the Lebanese novelist Huda barakat (b.1954 ) the Jordanian novelist and critic Fadia Faqir (b.1950) Syrian novelist Hamida Na'na'( b.1950 ) the Iraqi novelist Alia Mamdouh, ( b.1952 ) the Egyptian Salwa Bakr,( b.1950 ) .
At the end myself Aisha khawaja Razem . also we have The women who write in languages other than Arabic such as Etel Adnan and the writer and painter Zein Belbisey and prolific others who could remain in minds in spite the youth age for some of them like Siham Shashaa and Maiss Razem and Zein Belbisey ,

international interest in Arabic women literature , love to see their works published in books , or translated to different languages , so it became on ground true now , so many books have been published or translated for some of those women .
I can't deny at all the great effort that comes from (Prota) established and directed by the Palestinian poet , editor , translator Salma Khadra Jayyusi, it has helped bring out in English works by Palestinian women writers like the great Poet Fadwa Touqan, the novelist Sahar Khalifeh, and Liana Badr, along with works by other Arabs. So Garnet Publishing of London has begun a series called "Arab Women Writers" edited by the Jordanian novelist and critic Fadia Faqir. The five novels published for the Palestinian novelist Liana Badr, the Syrian Hamida Na'na' the Iraqi Alia Mamdouh, , the Egyptian Salwa Bakr, and the Lebanese Hoda Barakat.
The Poet Aisha Razem , myself of course , have my own originated written in English language poetry , and published !
So I will have to give a poem in this article to Aisha Razem :

A small shining train
By Aisha Khawaja Razem
– Jordan – Amman -

A small shining train
Was led by a diamond grain
Early in the morning
Stopped by
Stopped by
While the remains of moon
Was combing the sky
A wide dark cloud
Appeared like heaven's breathe
Stretched over and underneath
In the space of high
While the moon was leaving the sky
The train ...the train
I mean .... The shining Diamond grain
Stopped for a crowd of humans
Who were dipped in poverty
Hefted by a narrow lane
Weeping the lost gain
Since the kingdom
Aborted the lands of wheat
And bled her brain
By melting the men's minds in stain
Searching days and nights
For the eternal shiny
Diamond grain!
The train ..... the train
Slowly
Shy
Kissed the little parted Flame
Tasted the secret in the dry grain
Under the heavy
Trembled rain
Stopped
Slowly
Shy
Smiled in pain!

Zoya Zaidi
My dear Aisha, This was such an absorbing and informative read!
I learnt how ignorant I am about Arabic Literature, especially Women's literature. Arabic literature is so rich and old and holds a very large literary legacy for the world. The art and culture is equally so. World has seen such valuable manuscripts of Arabic Literature, in the beautiful tradition of Calligraphy, miniature paintings and architecture. Alas a lot of it is destroyed ion recent wars in Palestine and Iraq. I hope these contemporary works are translated into English for posterity.
I can understand the plight and predicament of these women writers i Arabic language, since the expectations of quite, demure, romantic and submissive writings aere expected of women in Urdu literature as well, my mother tongue, and breaking out of that mould is a daunting task, since I also write poetry in Urdu and face those problems. But the path has been paved already by my mother and aunt, also poets and writers in their own right.
I must congratulate you on this very meaningful and informative article.
Very scathing poem indeed!
Welcome to the Bay from my side!
((Hugs))
Love, Zoya
