End of a Beginning

END OF A BEGINNING

I wish I could have brought you in the spring;
But then, spring might not come this year, I said.
She answered, a thoughtless sound, and down the lane
We drove, trailed by my prophecy of dead
And dying love. Dully, the listless lake
Kept breaking, reflecting with sullen light
The heavy sky; and I knew, not for my sake,
Would the sun prophesy spring before night.
I stopped where the road turned under the oak,
And her warm-scented hair brushed my shoulder;
Spring came early just then, caught in my throat;
I reached from myself, only to hold her;
But carelessly she moved elsewhere; and then,
O Spring, the world's tears were raining again.

As a sonnet-lover I have quite a lot to say about this poem, a good bit of which is quite technical. Here I will only say that despite its flaws I like it very much; the writer shows much promise I think.
