Soap (an opera)

this piece uses role play
i take the part of bob
a man in awe of beer
who spends long hours gazing deep
into its black wrinkled eyes

SOAP (an opera)

BOB.
i swear i won't say a word
you talk all you like
i've got a lot on my mind
an inordinate amount
don't try and drag it out of me
you've been a curse to me
you know that?

SAL.
you're going round the twist
i've been a curse to you?
that's a good one that is

BOB.
what's that you're knitting?

SAL.
knitwear

BOB.
i wouldn't be seen dead in it

SAL.
it's for the baby

BOB.
you know you look more beautiful every time i look at you
you know that don't you?

SAL.
if you say so

BOB.
i just did didn't i?

where'd you learn to knit anyway?
all these years
i never knew you knitted
you kept that quiet
it's not very glamorous is it?
i mean it's a homemade garment of some description
how do you know a baby's going to fit in that thing?
how quickly does a baby grow anyway?
as fast as grass?

SAL.
don't talk like a pratt

BOB.
do they not grow as fast as grass?
how quick do they grow then?

SAL.
search me
about as quick as your dick i expect

BOB.
eh?
glaciers, dust, tectonic plates

you are aware i take it
that without food i'm going to go on being hungry

the creeping paralysis of boredom

you know what i love about you
aside from your smouldering indifference that is
the thing i love about you is
how by the sheer power of your magnetic personality
you have reduced me to idiocy

i'm just nipping out for a paper
i won't be gone long
