Cigarettes are not the only things that will kill... and not the only vice for this mere mortal....

Trigger

Compulsion does not merely exist,
But waits for a spark of hope
To light the fuse of temptation.

All bad habits have mothers
And only the fabled are born un-sired
A sole parent of my grievance? Not I.

Your own obsession with me
Provided the seed, creating mine
When I thought I'd ceased to crave....

How could I have missed
The fact you always were
And always will be the catalyst?

Accepting now the fault is not mine alone,
I give you up as my bad habit,
And finally, give up on you....

Cigarettes are a symptom of something larger. They differ from other addictive substances only in their social acceptability. I think the question is one of why we feel it is acceptable to harm ourselves?
Very well thought out and written.
Thanks. I can relate (too well :-))

Relationships can be addictive and toxic. Knowing yourself is the best beginning to freedom from what cripples you. You've held emotions in check while giving reason its chance and found the right answer. Beautifully written.
