This was inspired by someone on a writing site who had lost their son, but I took so long to complete it, it never got posted.

And Suddenly.......

Unexpected, harsh reality
litters minds landscape
of ripped seams
descending into chasms
of anguish and desolation,
no light.

Friends hold you aloft,
carry your torch
to help you see
the way forward
on the path of
no return.

Family encircling
love embracing,
time softens
the brittle edges of grief
rounding them into memories,
no forgetting.

This is touching, and stirs memories I'm sure most of us have experienced in one way or another.

StillHoppin The PoetBay support member heart!
It is a great description of the path to healing, though a parent who has lost a child may never wish to heal (I wouldn't) and the very idea of time softening the blow could seem a cruel and heartless act of time, at least at first. I like how you face the idea with respect, with honesty, and gentleness, and your expression of the idea that grief has brittle edges which may indeed be rounded with love, support, and time.

What an inspiring piece, shells.
I was drawn in by the title and the description, for I too have known the shock of bereavement -- as have many. This poem captures excellently the agony of sudden loss: the vast precipice of grief out of which it is so hard to ascend, yet hope's abiding beacon lifting the soul from torment. And the ravages of time softened by love as happy memories prevail.
Applause!
