Sometimes I Forget

have I told you that
sometimes
I forget

have I mentioned
that my brain;
its train,
don’t rattle
along the tracks
like it used to

did I say
that I’m sorry
for missing things
that might be misconceived
as ignorance

I don’t know
if I have
I don’t remember
like I once did

I’ve never been old before
just older,
which helps
because it means
that some of me still remembers

have I mentioned
that my brain
is missing things
that rattle
like a train
which could be misconceived
as ignorant tracks
in a mind
that is hanging on

yeah
I think I did

I found myself smiling and nodding in agreement with this, loved the analogy of the train in your second stanza, so well expressed.

You speak of my present and future. As we grow older and our memories more befuddled by neurons gone astray. I find myself believing I am a burden to those around me. But then I remember... I have value that transcends my memory!

Your poem brought all that to the fore in a way I could not have before.

Thanks for this illuminating text. Well written!
