14th of May, 1940, the Luftwaffe decimated Rotterdam, Netherlands, killing 210 soldiers and 940 civilians. Visited a friend in Rotterdam in 1995. It was a wonderful time. Unbeknownst to me at that time, this historical, tragic memory behind bright veneer.


Rotterdam

Red train rested at Rotterdam station
Over the border to meet a friend
Trains all over Europe pass here
Today is a bright and sunny day
Every person glows in its brightness
Realising not a former disaster, that
During the 40's destruction erupted
Along these very streets, evacuated
Murderous bombs wreaking havoc

A very poignant poem. In the tracks and pathways of where I live the Gestapo wreaked havoc as they fled. As it turns out, something we are also seeing in Ukraine. We must remember these things, but not let them bring us down to their level. Will humanity ever learn!
