A spooky villanelle in anticipation of Halloween

Vampire Villanelle

The footfalls tread upon the creaking floor
As I retire to rest on Hallow-night
And darkness knocks upon my bedroom door

A-sudden stricken by remembered lore,
I feel languor dispelled by waxing fright;
The footfalls tread upon the creaking floor

Tho' Poe had quoth the raven "Nevermore,"
Tonight all wings have vanished into flight;
And darkness knocks upon my bedroom door

I see, as terror seeps into my core,
A cloaked figure shadowed in dim light;
Its footfalls tread upon the creaking floor

In contradiction of the myths of yore,
The shadow never waited for invite
And darkness knocks upon my bedroom door

My doom remains to walk the day no more,
That priv'lege ruined by a single bite;
My footfalls tread upon the creaking floor
And darkness knocks upon your bedroom door.

Very well written indeed. The repetition makes it ominous and charming :) Those vampires are always lurking at night looking for a nibble.

Brilliant! And content doesn't suffer to form in fact they compliment each other. Well done, Nancy!

You've made a very difficult form seem easy. The necessary repetitions of lines really furthers the feeling of being stealthily pursued, unable to escape the inevitable. Really well done.
