Who Can Say?

I will forever wonder what led you
To shrink away from me. I'll wonder
How your mother learned that I
Had pledged my heart to you.
Did you tell her? If so, why, to have
Her make me stay away? You
Could have said as much, you know,
And, anyway, we were apart, but
Now you're back. What does that
Mean? You act as if I don't exist.
Does that mean that you're only
Back because you must cling to
Your mother, or have you returned
To see me, spineless, terrified of
Her, so you can look, but never
Speak? I'm clueless, though I love
You still. I never meant to cause
You trouble. I kept asking if I did,
And you'd say, “No; I want you here”
Until you didn't. Now, I wonder
Whether you are nuts, or immature,
Or just afraid.
