From a Chair on the Deck

It rained last night. The river's high.
The morning air is cool and damp.
The sun, restrained by gauzy haze,
Is here without the savage heat it's
Brought each day since late last
Week. A hummingbird has come
To feed. I barely hear its whirring
Wings. It stays for maybe twenty
Seconds. Then it dashes off. I'm
Sure it has a lot of things to do.
We all do, don't we? I should make
A list. I will in time, but, for the
Moment, I've decided I will pause,
As we all also must do.
