Shadows

Lucie has turned fifteen,
Shimmied from girl to woman
In the wisp of a belly-dancing
Candle flame above her cake.

I remember light and dark
In her giggling childhood,
When reassuring beams
Cast a magical glow against
Her beige bedroom walls,
A stage set for shadows.

I recall the magician's spell...

Look Lucie, against the wall,
See the playful shadows all,
Silhouettes of the nearly-night,
Some to tickle, some to fright,
All handmade from imagination
Born of simple manipulation.

Lucie has turned fifteen,
And there's a new shape
On the wall, a gnarled hand
Waving goodbye.

It's so hard to see them go, grow up and face the world. But, they come back full of new ideas about the world and they manage to change you as well. Enjoyed the poem.

Daughters grow to women and break a fathers heart. But if you've done your job well enough (and I'm sure you have) they return as women seeking what they left behind.
