Error of Judgement

The day we met,
You stole my heart.
We were very young,
Life yet to start.

And for a while
It all went well.
Hot nights Followed sunny days
But then something started to smell.

I am sure my bag was...
I thought I had more...
Did I forget the ATM?
Oh, now, I am not sure.

But I started to realise
All was not quite right
When you said you'd paint
The bedroom brilliant white

But instead you
Splashed
A tin
Of forest green gloss on one wall
And matte puce
On
The windows,
And went
Walkabout.

I started to consider
A parting of the ways:
That night
I was awoken
By a loud insistent knocking
Which turned out to be
The police with a warrant to search the house for stolen goods, namely TV sets.
And stereos.

Error of judgement, I know, but you
Were such a charmer. Even
Now, the thought of
You
Can make me
Sigh.
