Bulgarian Folk Traditions in Marchby unknow autor, resurch and traslated by Ann Wood

Folk Rites, Customs, and Beliefs: March - Baba MartaThis month begins the celebration of several religious holidays for which the exact date cannot be stated. They are directly related to the movements of Lent and Easter, which are different days each year and sometimes different months. This also shifts the holidays, which will be discussed below. This displacement can only be established using the annual calendar of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. For all other holidays that do not have a calendar change, the specific dates are indicated.
Cheese Platter - Forgiveness:
Before the onset of the Shrouds, Rush Sunday (Sunday of the Prodigal Son) is celebrated - it is eaten blissfully on Wednesday and Friday, and Pure Sunday Mesopustna (Meat Shrouds) - is fasted on Wednesday and Friday, and meat is allowed on Sunday. And it is only after them that Syrupous Sunday is celebrated, or even Syrna Zagovezni - Forgiveness. On this day, the young visit the homes of older relatives and their godparents to ask for forgiveness from them. This is where the name of the Farewell Pledge holiday comes from. On this day, everyone must reconcile with one another and forgive one another's sins.
In the evening the whole family gathers in their home. A meal is prepared to serve fish, eggs and milk. Omes is baked and pie is made without lard, but only with eggs, cheese and oil. Meat is not eaten tonight. After the table is set, the request for forgiveness begins. Only the young want forgiveness. They kiss the hand of the elders and say, "Forgiveness!", Which is answered: "Lord forgive. Be forgive! ?Then the dinner begins. When they finish, the custom of grunting begins. A solid thread is tied above the table with a piece of white halvah tied at its lower end (somewhere they cook a boiled and peeled egg or cheese). The thread turns and the halva starts to swing. Everyone seeks only to catch and eat the piece with his mouth, which causes a lot of laughter.
On the Evening Evening, great fires are lit, leaping for the health of older children and young people. She also shoots herself with a bow and lighted arrows at the girls' yards. This custom is called snapping, and arrows are called chugs. They are made of pine sticks or dogwood, the top of which is soaked with pine tar. It is also about the health of parents, loved ones, fertility in fields, bees and animals. While the bangs flutter, the girls play horo around the fire.
Suitable dishes for the holiday are: veiled eggs in the forest, fish, grilled, baked cheese in parchment.

Todor's Week:
After Zagoveni, the so-called. Todorova or Black Sunday (week), the days of which are just before Todorovden. According to popular belief, the important days of this week are: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Each of them has its own etymological name and specific purpose. The rituals and customs of these days are briefly described.

Pass Monday, Clean Monday:
This day is celebrated against dog rabies. According to popular belief, this disease was a bad spirit that inhabited them and led them to rage and death. To banish the spirits, all the dogs were brought out of the village and there, on specially prepared swings, swinged up to three times by their owners. In some places in the country, they tie a goblet full of ashes or an empty can in the tail of a dog, allowing it to run through the village. It was thought that a dog tortured in this way would not go mad.
Dogs are also coming out on Monday to run around the houses for a future banquet. They are necessarily donated by the farmers with money, wheat, meat, stews and more.

Black Tuesday, Dry Tuesday, Usov Tuesday:
This day bears three names because, according to popular belief, it plays three important roles.
It's called black because it's the beginning of Tuesdays, which are considered bad days during the week. Generally, on Tuesday, no road is started, no agreement is concluded, no sowing, etc., because everything that starts this day is unsuccessful. And this Tuesday is the worst of the whole year. It is believed that if one is born on this day, they will be the most unhappy person. They say, "He was born on Black Tuesday." This Tuesday represents the land and it is in his possession. Celebrated to avoid drought. The custom is to mix the pie and smear it with honey. It breaks pieces that are left in the basket, on the fields, in the garden, and some of them are thrown on the roof of the house and into the river.
The day is also celebrated against the insidious disease of animal feet, called mustache, shot. From it, they atrophy and dry up. The custom of this holiday is to mix the pie, to pass it and give it to the neighbors.

Crazy Wednesday:
It is celebrated against the madness of man. Mad people are watered with a decoction of herbs and are led to a fable to feast on them. Nobody does anything to keep him crazy.

Thunderous Thursday:
Like Black Tuesday, this day is considered bad - everything that starts is a failure. This is where the phrase "Thursday - non-return" comes from. What is more, according to popular belief, working on this day became stagnant, shabby, stunned. So nobody does anything.

Todor Saturday, Todor Day:
This is the first Saturday of the Easter fasts. They call it Todoritsa or Equine Easter.
This day is dedicated to horses - to multiply and not to become ill with the push rod disease. Horse-hoofed cows are honored in honor of the horses, which are turned into church and are distributed for horse health. Maize is separately cooked, in which beans and lentils are placed. This brew is mixed with the horses' oats and given early in the morning.
At noon, there are carts running - horse racing. It happens in nice places where everyone comes out. Horseback riding is one of the best traditions in celebrating Todorovden. The winners are awarded prizes. The celebration ends with people, meals and merry.
From the next day - Sunday, the Great or Easter fasts begin and continue until the day of the Resurrection of Christ.

Baba Marta, Martenitsa - March 1:
According to popular belief, Baba Marta is a creature that gives happiness to people. Early in the morning on the right arm of the children tied martenitsa. Martenitsies are exchanged and given away between relatives, friends and loved ones. They are about health, against lessons, and to keep people white, ruddy and laughing.

Martenitsas are worn until the first swallows and storks come. As soon as one child notices one of these birds, he or she must remove the marten and tie it to a deciduous tree or shrub.Babies, St. 40 points - March 9:
It is celebrated against Baba Sharka, a hay fever, a disease most commonly caused by children.
On the previous day, bread or colas called babies were mixed. Their shape resembles that of a baby doll. Holes are made on it, symbolizing the rash of the disease. The number of small loaves should be 40, ie. conforms to the number of the Holy Forty Martyrs.
On the day of the holiday, the babies are smeared with honey, smoked, and carried to the homes of close children, godparents, grandmothers and bridesmaids, if there is a young bride in the house.
Suitable dishes for the holiday are: ritual bread and fudge.

Blagovets, Annunciation - March 25:
On that day St. Archangel Gabriel announced to the Blessed Virgin Mary the good news that she was honored to conceive by the Holy Spirit and to give birth to the Savior of the world. Therefore, the day is called the Annunciation or the Annunciation.
According to popular belief, the cuckoo came along with the swallow that day and reported that winter was already over and summer was approaching. From the caves of the serpent king began to move and emerge snakes, lizards, lures, self-wills and other spirits. To prevent them from entering homes, people perform rites. Early in the morning they started banging on the yard with iron machines, scrapers and more. They thought that when they made a loud noise, the spirits would be afraid and would not enter their home.
The houses and yards are being cleaned at Blagovets. The garbage of barns and barns is burned. The hives are opened and the first bees are allowed to fly. On 29, 30 and 31 March, the beans were sown because, when they were sown, it became the sweetest.
