fables

such silly stories we heard as kids

pots of gold at rainbow's end

wolves that dress in grandma's clothes

and eat little girls

stories the ended happily—

but not for the wolf

those stories trained us to believe

exactly the wrong things

but they served a purpose

bought us time, a useful commodity

by the time we figured it out

we were little adults

making little adult decisions, i.e. mistakes

that were often messy

and ill-timed, and either terrifying

or a great deal of fun

those stories prepared us

for absurdities to come

big fat stories to come

that are laughably, demonstrably false
