A fundamental responsibility of every grandfather to every grandson is the  introduction of reading the classics of adventure. These authors who through their works presented to impressionable young readers dignity,  honour, courage and trust

The Legacy

Small and cluttered the room

Brimming with adventures

Dumont Verne London

Kipling Melville Boroughs

Well worn shining volumes

Patinated by caring generations

Caressed bindings turned pages

Floor to ceiling in anticipation

They come in evenings lead by

Old men in tattered sweaters

Shuffling where once they

Strode with measured pride

Now with grandsons they

Settle in the aged leather

Wingback teaching as taught

The joyful art of reading

About 3 years ago the new "craze" was the ESCAPE ROOM with venues springing up all over the place. You and your friends were locked in a room and using clues had to find a way out. Yet, for as long as I can remember the Escape room was my sanctuary only then it was called the Public Library. For surely as I read the classics such as Treasure Island or Call of the Wild, I did escape to the high seas or the wolf ridden wilderness of N America. Books are still my escape today.

Your words so expertly crafted took me back there in an instant and into that comfortable moment that nurtured my love of reading. Thank you for that.

I never had such a room, such a grandparent, such a treasure-trove of tales read to me, but in this poem I now have a world of images that feel as real to me as if it were my own. Thank you.

Affectingly written! I like "strode with measured pride" (the internal near-rhyme) and the last quatrain most especially. Also like the litany of the authors' names!

Thanks for posting!

And so the wonderful written worlds continue to astound. I listened to Ray Bradbury talking about how novels and libraries changed his life. The wonderment in his eyes as he spoke was infectious. I hope it is not being lost on the younger generations.
