Magnolia

Stark in skeletal blackened form

It offers no redemptive vision

The winter harsh and over long

Has eased of late and in submission

Standing in the garden corner

It’s buds a hint of enduring life

Sun and rain engage their power

Marshalling blossoms all as rife

Overnight it blooms in majesty

Pale pink to rouge its baronial cloak

Raliegh’s vestment in full array

It’s Petals fall for my lady’s walk

Oh, the disciple-of-Dante in me (always looking toward the light of a Beatrice) cherishes the last line immeasurably!

We have one in our yard. You've described it perfectly.

What a delightful piece, Joe. The contrasts in the appearance of the magnolia as winter gives way to spring are very well drawn here. We particularly like the 'Marshalling blossoms' and 'Baronial clock'; and also the dash of romance in the final lines :>)
