After the loss of a loved one.

Lonely

No one there to hold his hand
Or say kind words to ease
Those last precious moments on earth.
When his brain disconnected his eyes
And slowly turned its attention instead
To approaching timelessness…
For the time in-between those States,
We, the lonely left behind, wonder –
Incessantly – if he was frightened
Or fearful, and how long he lay there
Waiting… waiting…waiting…
On Life’s most lonely platform
For that one predestined train?

Alan J Ripley The PoetBay support member heart!
As a relative newcomer to poetbay.
I find that poems like this speak to me,
On oh so many different levels.
Having lost so many loved ones myself,
Still that's the curse of growing old.
When my train comes in,
They will probably need me to Stoke the boiler.
Thanks for sharing Allen.

This calls to mind a dear friend of mine who decided to exit this life too soon... and all the thoughts I've wondered about his last moments alone while he was dealing with his decision he made during his distress. Your words are striking for me and say exactly where my mind was at for so long about this situation. Emotive and impactful, thanks.

I think many of us can relate - there is another world you inhabit after someone you love has passed on. I remember when my father died, leaving the hospital and a friend called wanting to moan about work and I was struck between the surreal feeling of sudden loss and the mundane.

This is very sad yet so well-written. Losing loved ones is always painful. You've captured that emotion well, I and like the image of a "predestined train." Thanks for posting, and welcome to PoetBay again, Griffonner!

This is a very sensitive contemplation on death and the wonder of afterlife or, as you phrase it “timelessness” the poem reflects true empathy loss and love. Very well written
