A few examples: Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, Venezuela, Cuba, "peace through strength," inflation, too generous unemployment compensation, "law and order," ballot fraud.
To learn what the sages think. Gullible journalists
Write down their words, and politicians repeat
Their prescriptions and warnings. Conventional
Wisdom prevails. It's an industry, really,
And, like all the others, it's more concerned
With keeping the gravy train rolling than selling
A product with worth. As decades go by,
The sages prove wrong. Their fears are unfounded.
Their policies gravely ill-suited to whatever we
Have to face, but, by then, no one points out
Their obvious failings. Instead, they're consulted
Again.

The Sages
It takes no time at all and damned little moneyTo learn what the sages think. Gullible journalists
Write down their words, and politicians repeat
Their prescriptions and warnings. Conventional
Wisdom prevails. It's an industry, really,
And, like all the others, it's more concerned
With keeping the gravy train rolling than selling
A product with worth. As decades go by,
The sages prove wrong. Their fears are unfounded.
Their policies gravely ill-suited to whatever we
Have to face, but, by then, no one points out
Their obvious failings. Instead, they're consulted
Again.
