PHILLIS WHEATLEY - THATS HER SLAVE NAME (Additans)

Taken as a slave

In what is now

Known as Nigeria

Formally parts known

As Benin - Gambia

Took fellow Africans

For the slave trade

Yes wholesalers - more than a few

There were many wholesalers - Africans - Arabs

Involved in the wholesale slave trade

Phillis being but one sold and resold till she finally landed in America

The Land Of The Free! (sic)

Along her way - robbed of her African name! On landing in America - Retailed!

Made to stand upon - The Auction Block!

A white man saw her - liked the look of her!

Decided that she would make a companion for his dear wife in his house!

Not unlike buying a 'pet! '

The first thing she had was her African names taken away!

Replaced with Phillis Wheatley - her white owner's family name!

They taught her English & how to read & write
Eventually, she were - FREED - from bondage & slavery!
Became a writer of poetry! As more  people were reading her works

She became known.
Many of her works have ' been lost ' over time! Very sad to write!

Two quotes of Phillis worthy of quoting are:

'' We had our own religion in Africa long before you white men came! ''

'' YOU ASK ME DID I SING AND DANCE '', Said with acid I like to think in her voice! On being patronised!
