Rest in peace Professor in memory of Professor Alexander Chirkov by Ann WoodTwo years ago today, Bulgaria lost one of its luminaries in modern medicine and science - Prof. Alexander Chirkov. One of those Bulgarians who had every opportunity to stay in the West, where they would be successful, but chose to return to their homeland and devote themselves to it.
He left in 1966 for West Berlin, where he specialized with the famous cardiac surgeon Prof. Büchler. He stayed there as a doctor at the University Hospital, then transferred to West Germany - to the University of Frankfurt am Main and the University of Freiburg, where he has been a professor since 1981.
In 1984 he returned to Bulgaria to perform the first heart transplant in Bulgaria and in the Balkans in 1986. For many years he was the director of the hospital "St. Ekaterina". Prof. Chirkov is gaining worldwide popularity and appreciation for his professionalism in the field of heart diseases, operations, transplants.
A man of deep faith and a scientist, in one of his last interviews the professor stated: "Lack of faith hurts."
