I was challenged to write a follow up poem for Posers and this is what I came up with. Search for Posers on Poetbay if you’d like to read it. This poem is what would happen if I followed the advice in the last stanza of Posers.

Digital Detox

I went for a walk without my smartwatch today
I didn’t get to record how many steps I took
Does that mean I didn’t burn any calories?
Of course not!
I don’t need to know how many

What I need is to look up at the sky and notice its blueness
I need to wonder about the clouds
Are they cumulus or deciduous?
But deciduous is a type of tree, isn’t it?
No, I don’t need to Google that immediately

I got home and played Solitaire
Yes, Solitaire with real cards
Got paper cuts while shuffling
Why does this feel so foreign?
This used to be the best way to figure out if the deck was full

Visited the vet to buy a muzzle for Jalebi
‘225 ma’am’
‘Change for 500?’
Hands me 250 and a packet of Pedigree
I guess they can’t keep Melody chocolates at the vet!

Then, my earbuds ran out of charge
So I had to survive an hour-long commute without music
I listened to the auto driver speak to his friend in Kannada
I watched the rain pitter-pattering on the roof of a white car
Raindrops seemed to dance
I would have loved to capture this on camera
But I resisted
What if I forget this moment?
What if my mind’s eye is not able to recall this tiny joy?

You’ve just noted it down
Those dancing drops are now a poem
Isn’t that enough?
I guess it’ll have to do for now.
