I don’t open the door for the cook
I don’t put the clothes in the machine

I don’t do my chores anymore
I live with my brother nowI don’t order the bread
I don’t open the door for the cook
I don’t put the clothes in the machine
I used to, but I don’t anymore
And when asked why
I remember the times
I was beaten,
I was hit,
I was threatened,
I felt helpless
And I remember what he said
‘I’m preparing you for the world.’
