Maybe, one day, I will try to help someone the reich pursues.
Perhaps I won't. I haven't yet. I've done nothing to shield
Queers, or immigrants, or desperate women, nothing
To assure that academics utter painful truths. I neither nod
Nor shake my head when dolts proclaim the nation saved.
I turn away. I'm rich enough, and white enough, and also
Male, so, truth be told, their fascist raiment does not bind.
It flatters me. I plan to stay anonymous, to go about my
Business without being noticed. I will wait. In time,
Their fissured edifice will crumble. We all will be old,
And those who might have cared for us will have been
Sent out of the country. Droughts and floods
And hurricanes, unhindered by the reich's refusal to
Acknowledge climate change, will push us toward
The edge of famine, just as all the enemies we've made
Will make a common cause, and that will be our reich's
Demise. Amid the chaos and destruction, I will beam.
The monster's dead! Perhaps, at that time, I will find
The courage to stand up for those the beaten fascists
Planned to beat, but I am not convinced I will. I'm much
More likely to continue shrugging, keen to look away.
