Treading Water

Themeless, this day. Here are facts. It rained last night,
Ahead of the arrival of the guys who'd close the pool.
I woke up with a start at three. I'll have to drain the pool
(Again) or pay a lot more money. Starting in the dawn's
Dim light, I did, and then I went to school to hear my barely
Fluent teacher try to walk my fellow students, uninspired
Undergrads, through concepts rather dense for them:
Hegemony, acculturation, integration of the subjugated into
What is nothing more than an obscene idea, Europe is
The pinnacle of evolution. You, my friend, are brown
And stupid, clearly suited to a all-too brief and ugly sort
Of life in silver mines, or picking cotton, chopping sugar.
Name your poison. You will die, and, with you, decency
Will die. I come back home, and learn another dozen
Gazan kids are dead, proof of white hegemony. The world
Mocks its own pretensions. Mouth a platitude about
Compassion as you peddle drones and missiles, concentration
Camps. A steady stream of souless shitheads, people
Who should be in prison, take turns boring boring
Representatives of broken nations, products of hegemony,
As I approve the work the guys who came to close the pool
Have done, and close my eyes. I can't imagine a more
Themeless day.
