K.O.-ed by a Coed
What am I to do with this woman, a college student, a girl,
Really, who sits just in front of me, babbling gaily with
The young woman who's next to her? Thin and devastatingly
Lovely, perfect, Hispanic with gently hooked nose, and cinnamon
Skin, and thick, black hair. Sometimes, she turns and talks to me
About a topic the teacher's proposed. Her smile is like being
Skewered by lightning, like having a prize fighter smack
My face. I try not to stumble, to remain coherent. It's hard,
And doubly so, since I know that I cannot be someone she'd
Find appealing, and, beyond her preternatural beauty,
She doesn't appeal to me.
