Love doesn’t fail because expectations exist; it fails when they’re hidden. Something I learned long ago is that people cannot read our minds even when they love us. We have to be honest with our expectations to prevent resentments from growing.

What Goes Unspoken

Unspoken expectations
are about as effective
as birthday candles on a cake.
Even blown out,
they carry no weight
to shape what comes next.

Most wishes are not held.
They flicker, then fade.
If one survives,
it is either dumb luck
or the result of showing up,
of taking each step
toward where you say you want to go.

Wishing for true love,
then finding it,
then fearing its loss
if expectations are spoken
aloud -
you might as well expect
to win the lottery
without ever buying a ticket.

So we wait,
believing silence will protect us.
But love does not survive
without honesty.
One candle left lit,
the wish evaporates,
what might have been
goes dark on its own.
