February Lupercus

In this treacherous month of change,
Seeking food – the wild birds range;
Till milder winds begin to blow,
and sudden thaw melts the snow.

February, when pagan priests,
honoured Lupercus with sacrificed beasts.
Now, Valentines with hearts and flowers,
beseech from love – romantic powers.

Sleek moles prepare for baby’s birth;
scrabbling – building, in softened earth.
Rooks pair, and geese begin to lay,
The song-thrush greets the springtime day.

Insects now multiply and throng,
While woodlarks give seductive song.
Nature great plan depicted here,
in this – the shortest month of the year

Nice rhythm and rhyme. Maybe line 6 is a bit too long, you really want a shorter word than sacrificed.

Beautiful and inspiring. Rhyming poems are much harder to write than most people think, especially a good rhyming poem.

SallyGrey, I just love this. The imagery is so vivid that it reminds me of all that is happening, often sight unseen, and how spring is steadily advancing upon us. Yay!

Thank you. I needed this.
Sincerely,
Melinda

An enjoyable poem that just about covers all the aspects of that time of year. With pleasing rhymes and a smooth flow, it reminds me of the poetry masters of old. Thank you so much for sharing. Blessings, Allen

I don't mean to be dramatic, but this takes my breath away.

Bookmarked, printed, read and reread and will read again.
