The iconic line "never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee" comes from Meditation XVII of Devotions upon Emergent Occasions (1624), a prose work by English poet and cleric John Donne.

FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS By John Donne

■THE MEANING

Donne wrote these meditations while recovering from a severe, near-fatal illness, reflecting deeply on human vulnerability.

▪︎ Universal Connection: He argues that humanity is fundamentally interconnected, famously stating, "No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.

▪︎Mutual Diminishment: Because we are all part of mankind, the death of any person diminishes everyone.

•The Toll: In Donne's era, a church bell would toll to signal when someone had died. He advises against asking who has died because every death is a shared human loss, and our own mortality is always on the horizon.

■CULTURAL LEGACY

•Literature: Ernest Hemingway famously borrowed the phrase for the title of his 1940 novel about the Spanish Civil War, For Whom the Bell Tolls.

•Music: phrase inspired instrumental title track on Metallica's 1984 album Ride the Lightning.

FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS

By John Donne

NO MAN IS AN ISLAND,
ENTIRE OF ITSELF.
EACH IS A PIECE OF THE CONTINENT,
A PART OF THE MAIN.
IF A CLOD BE WASHED AWAY BY THE SEA,
EUROPE IS THE LESS.
AS WELL AS IF A PROMONTORY WERE.
AS WELL AS IF A MANOR OF THINE OWN
OR OF THINE FRIEND'S WERE.
EACH MAN'S DEATH DIMINISHES ME,
FOR I AM INVOLVED IN MANKIND.
THEREFORE, SEND NOT TO KNOW
FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS,
IT TOLLS FOR THEE.

I just found out another friend has passed away a few days ago. He was in much pain before he passed. He was an earth gem. It saddened me upon hearing the news. And I thought of this poem. I am so much like the man that penned this poem. It was not always that way. RIP Jeffrey Earl Williams. Hope to see you again when my turn comes.
