I can't explain it. Please don't ask. Sometimes words come to me and these were insistent.

THE SPOKEN TIME

Within the span

Of allotted time,

In that meridian -

As Venus entered

The Virgo house -

Someone was to die.

Would you prefer

It had been another

Who you decide

was better suited?

On what basis so?

You are no God

Do not oversee

Create or power

This Universe!

So how would you

Be qualified

To make that choice?

In the natural course

The records spoke

And called her name

"Annette!" it said aloud

And in a flash

The deed was done.

It could have been

A George or Mirabelle,

Nigel, Mick or Jack!

So now is the time

To select your stone

And leave it there

Upon the grave

To tell the world

You were visiting

A departed soul,

And know it was

The undisputed time.

William Hughes
"Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."

Not sure this is applicable to the message or of your interesting poem, but the JohnDonne quote came to mind.

This poem works precisely because you straddle between the line of the ‘austere’ and the ‘erratic’ in a way that defies the senses. The swift, short lines descend wonderfully on the page and drag the eyes downward. The poem hints at an interior life that makes the reader want to dig deeper but also respect the speaker’s privacy. Good job.

Intriguing. How could we make such a choice? Whereas at the end of the day, we stand before a grave where it would seem that decision has been made. Quite deep and thought provoking.
