Written to a prompt which I used for the title.
progress was more forward motion,
with the occasional stumble leading to a failure or two,
but, to all the world, better,
using logic and common sense,
whatever science presented itself was deemed worthy of consideration,
past wrongs acknowledged with promises to do better…
real personal growth.
But the hard truth is this:
America was never the responsible adult it claimed to be.
I believed it had grown up,
matured into its potential.
It is a narcissist that has now revealed the truth:
it was all for show, for power
and when the power of some
was being dimmed by the promise of a fully realized democracy
it reverted to its infancy,
and so,
it starts again.

The Hard Truth
After the rocky teen yearsprogress was more forward motion,
with the occasional stumble leading to a failure or two,
but, to all the world, better,
using logic and common sense,
whatever science presented itself was deemed worthy of consideration,
past wrongs acknowledged with promises to do better…
real personal growth.
But the hard truth is this:
America was never the responsible adult it claimed to be.
I believed it had grown up,
matured into its potential.
It is a narcissist that has now revealed the truth:
it was all for show, for power
and when the power of some
was being dimmed by the promise of a fully realized democracy
it reverted to its infancy,
and so,
it starts again.
