Insomnia
Listen
To crickets speak,
Soothing solitude
Incrementally toward
Level best
A perfect circle of
A gaping puncture and
A promised end -
A cat I'll never
see again
I'm so sick of
Feeding them and
Treating them
And knowing what
Fly strike is
And what it is to be too late
When it's a group of dogs
I'm mostly sick
Of not being able to
Bear it in her place
The cats. The dad.
The violence fifteen short
Years can inflict
I see me standing in ruins
Knowing
Collapse and continue
Carry a price of
Almost equal measure
Shall I be selfish enough
To survive?
Endings
Imperfect beginnings
Nothing ever quite as
It should be
Of a certainty not me
Pause
Scalpel thinking and
Appreciate the melody
Night's orchestra playing
The sound of sane
Positively trying
Positivity
As if reason could be
Tamed to trauma
And train wrecks
My thoughts are sharper
Than Louie's claws
Slash mercilessly
But there's a difference
I didn't pull the trigger
People are human
Things look better in daylight
I didn't save him
People are painful
He's not coming back in daylight
And I'll still feel insecure
I argue quietly
Not drowning out the crickets
