The Cruelty of Cars
Yesterday her son said,
I can't wait 'til I have a car.
She said, Wait.
I can't he said.
I can wait until you have a car.
Why.
One day a car will pull out of the driveway
and you will be in it and you
will leave me.
But cars can come back, he said, crying softly.
Only to leave again.
Cars take away and bring back
and promise freedom;
cars leave mothers childless.
Cars break hearts
Cars are powerful and cruel.
Go outside and play, my son.
