To be in Love

is to practice kindness candidly,
curtailing what cruelty was once
the ebb and flow of the red sea
that made up the contents of your heart.

Yes, loving makes us human but
sometimes the human tries to flee
back to the comfort
of the mess their life
once was, because
fear-filled hearts keep clawing
to suffering’s feast despite the maggots
nipping at their talons.

But if you’ve loved and well, the beloved
guided by love’s light, will find
the cave you’ve hid within and hold
your hand and drag you back to warmth.

And if you’ve loved and well, sometimes
love will come alone, and give you warmth
to stop the shivering, sober up, and sit
you straight so with your own two hands
you’ll grab at kindness freely given
to everyone but yourself.

William Hughes The PoetBay support member heart!
Lovely poetic treatise on Love. Well composed as always.

''Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.''
